Biography

Dr. Parasuraman Selvam is currently Head, National Centre for Catalysis Research (NCCR), IIT-Madras, Chennai, and Professor in the Department of Chemistry, IIT-Madras, Chennai; Coordinator – MTech (Catalysis Technology) program, IIT-Madras; Visiting Professor: International Research Organization for Advanced Science and Technology (IROAST), Kumamoto University, Kumamoto (Japan).

Earlier, Prof. Selvam was a Faculty at IIT-Bombay, Mumbai (India) & Tohoku University, Sendai (Japan); Visiting Professor at Delaware Energy Institute, University of Delaware, Newark (U.S.A.); School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Queen’s University, Belfast (U.K.); Visiting Associate Professor, School of Chemical Engineering, The University of Queensland, Brisbane (Australia). He also served as an Eminent International Visitor at the School of Science and Health, Western Sydney University, Penrith (Australia), and as an Adjunct Faculty Member at the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering, University of Surrey, Guildford (U.K.) & School of Chemical Engineering and Analytical Science, The University of Manchester, Manchester (U.K.).

Prior to these, Prof. Selvam was a Research Associate in the Department of Condensed Matter Physics and Laboratory of X-ray Crystallography, University of Geneva, Geneva (Switzerland).  Prof. Selvam is an experienced academician and scientist with a doctoral degree from the Indian Institute of Technology – Madras (IIT-Madras) who has acquired a wealth of experience across prestigious institutions worldwide. 

Prof. Selvam’s research work mainly involves the development of novel synthetic procedures for the preparation of ordered nanoporous (zeolitic) materials such as silica, alumina, carbon, titania, ceria, zirconia, metallosilicates, mealloaluminates, and a variety of other mixed metal oxides, including perovskite, spinel, and olivine structures.  In addition, Prof. Selvam is also involved in the development of nano and hierarchical zeolites, size- and shape-controlled nanomaterials, and supported metal catalyst systems. Prof. Selvam’s research interests also include nanostructured materials, heterogeneous catalysis for green chemical routes, environmental remediation processes, and energy conversion (biomass, solar hydrogen) and storage (methanol fuel cell, lithium-ion battery) methods. 

Prof. Selvam’s major contribution also includes the design and development of novel heterogeneous catalysts for a variety of industrially important organic transformations, which have received an overwhelming response both from industry and academia.  Several industrial consultancies and sponsored projects that he has brought to the Institute have helped him build a strong and vibrant catalysis research group at IIT-Madras.

Prof. Selvam held several visiting and adjunct faculty positions in various universities and institutes, both in India and abroad, and was bestowed with several national and international awards and honours.  He has published over 400 original research papers in peer-reviewed journals/conferences and is a co-inventor of about 25 patents.
